Stitch regulation depends on the machine knowing how fast you're moving your machine. The encoder takes that information and shares it with the machine, but that encoder is dependent upon a little piece of rubber, the O-Ring.

Eventually, an O-Ring will wear out (or pop off when you're packing up the machine for a move).
