MicroQuilter is a 100 wt. extra-fine polyester thread designed for invisible machine applique, detail quilting, and stitch in the ditch. It is an extremely fine thread that can be sewn with a very small needle, rendering the thread virtually invisible. MicroQuilter is noticeably strong, especially considering its thin diameter and is the preferred thread for micro stippling and miniatures.
The MicroQuilter thread is a 100 weight thread made out of polyester. It’s strong and very fine and you can use a really small needle (60/8) in your sewing machine. A smaller needle means a smaller hole. I was out of that size needle so I used a size 70/10. That’s still a small needle. The photos below were taken right after I was done stitching. You can still see the holes very easily. After time and once it’s layered, basted, and quilted, the holes will close up and not be nearly as visible.
Microquilter is a very versatile lightweight thread. In the longarm world, its obvious use is for small, dense fillers. It’s perfect for microstippling, matchstick filling, tiny pebbling, and designs with lots of backtracking. It is also very useful for stitching in the ditch, whether you plan to use Microquilter in the rest of the quilt or not. Finally, Microquilter works well as a bobbin thread! We recommend a 16/MR 3.5 needle with Microquilter for longarm users.
We use Microquilter here primarily as a quilting thread and use either Microquilter or The Bottom Line in the bobbin. We use a size 14/MR or 16/MR 3.5 needle with Microquilter on our longarms and have had no significant issues with it at all. If you experience any thread breakage or shredding, we recommend that you troubleshoot your machine as you normally would. We slow down the bobbin winders to use 100 wt thread. The secret is to make sure that your thread is fully seated in the tension guides.
