First you must measure your quilt top.  If your quilt top is a “standard” size, then you can use this handy chart.  If it falls somewhere in between, then follow the instructions below the chart.

How to Figure the Amount of Wide Quilt Backing to Order

1.  Measure the width (W) and length (L) of your completed quilt top.  For example:  60” W x 72” L

2.  Add the number of extra inches required by your longarm quilter (usually 3” on each side for a total of 6”).  Prewashing means less shrinking and crinkles. As you probably know, fabric shrinks when it's been washed and dried. If you wash your quilt AFTER you've sewn it together, the fabrics will most likely shrink and have an unwanted crinkle effect that you weren't expecting.  We also suggest adding 1/8 - ¼ yard for shrinkage if you plan to pre-wash you're backing. *

60” + 8” + 5” = 73” W

72” + 8” + 5” = 85” L

3.  You will need a wide back that measures at least 73” x 85”.  Most of our wide backs are 108” wide, which can be used for the length of the quilt.

4.  Divide the measurement for the width of your quilt by 36” to figure the amount of yardage to order:

73” ÷ 36” = 1.89 yards of 108” fabric.

We sell by the ¼ yard, so you would need to order 2 yards.  That will give you a piece that measures 72” x 108”.  Remember; it is better to have too much than not enough!

Helpful Hints:

  • While it is your personal choice, we recommend pre-washing your wide back in cold water and drying in a cool dryer as wide quilt backing shrinks at a higher rate in the width than regular quilting cottons.  If your quilt top is larger than 97” long and you plan to pre-wash, add ¼ yard to the calculated yardage above.
  • If you have a very large quilt top, make sure to carefully calculate your yardage requirements because a 108” wide back may not be large enough.  Keep in mind we carry up to 120” wide backs.
